How to Convert a Bank of America Statement to Excel
Export a Bank of America PDF or CSV and convert it to categorised Excel. Covers transfers, card payments, and what not to count as spend.
Bank of America statements are downloadable as PDF, and many accounts also offer a spreadsheet export. This walkthrough covers both, plus how to get a categorised Excel file without linking your BofA login.
Download the statement from Bank of America
Sign in at bankofamerica.com.
Open the checking, savings, or credit-card account.
Choose Statements & Documents (or Statements on a card).
Download the PDF for the period you want.
From account activity you can often Download a custom date range as CSV or Excel. Use that for a quick dump. Use the official PDF when you need the statement as the bank issued it.
What a BofA statement includes
Opening and closing balances
Deposits and credits (pay, transfers in, refunds)
Withdrawals and debits (card spend, ACH, ATM, fees)
For cards: payments, interest, and the statement balance vs current balance
The budget lives in the debit lines. Transfers between your own BofA accounts should not count as spending.
Convert the file to Excel
Go to statementtobudget.com/bank-of-america-statement-to-excel.
Upload the PDF, CSV, or Excel file. Three pages are free with no account.
Review the categorised transactions. Fix any merchant that landed in the wrong bucket.
Export Excel, or build next month's budget from the real category totals.
No Plaid connection. No BofA credentials. The file is processed and then removed.
Things that trip people up
Keep the Change and transfers. Internal transfers and round-up savings look like spend if you do not filter them. A converter that drops payments, deposits, and transfers keeps the budget honest.
Credit-card payments from checking. That is a transfer, not a new expense. Count the card purchases on the card statement, not the payment on the checking statement, or you double-count.
Zelle and online bill pay. These often show a person or biller name, not a category. Assign them once; the next statement will be faster.
Scanned or printed PDFs. If you printed-to-PDF or photographed a paper statement, you need OCR. Text-layer PDFs from the BofA portal convert faster and more accurately.
Use the Excel file
Open the export, freeze the header row, and pivot by category. Compare groceries vs dining, and list every recurring name (Netflix, gym, iCloud). Those two views usually explain more than a pie chart of the bank's own labels.
